Garowe, Puntland, Somalia — Local reports say eight men were killed Sunday afternoon in an attack by a Turkish military speedboat at a coastal area known as Gaala’ood, located between Eyl and Garacad in Puntland’s Nugaal region. Neither Puntland authorities nor Turkish officials have commented on the incident.
If confirmed, the incident would mark a second deadly encounter in the same stretch of coastline within a week, following the August 18–20 drone strike near Garmaal that killed four men after a small boat delivered supplies to the hijacked cargo vessel M/V LUTUF. That earlier strike, also unconfirmed by Turkish authorities, prompted Puntland’s Ministry of Security to demand clarification and warn that unexplained foreign military operations in its waters could damage security cooperation with international partners.
Today’s reported incident differs in method from the earlier strike — local accounts describe a direct engagement by a speedboat rather than an aerial or drone strike — raising questions about whether foreign naval forces are now conducting closer-range operations along the coast in addition to aerial surveillance and strikes.
No details have yet emerged on the identities of those killed, whether they were fishermen or suspected pirates, or the precise circumstances of the encounter. Community elders in the Garmaal case strongly disputed that the earlier victims were pirates, insisting they were ordinary fishermen; similar disputes may arise here pending confirmation.
