The press release concerned the Puntland political and military crisis of 2001–2002 and the operation undertaken by forces loyal to President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed.
Independent contemporary reporting provides important corroboration. On May 7, 2002, the humanitarian news service IRIN reported renewed fighting near Qardho between forces loyal to Abdullahi Yusuf and forces loyal to Jama Ali Jama. IRIN stated that Yusuf was conducting an operation code-named “Puntland Stability First,” which was described as an effort to restore law and order. Crucially, IRIN attributed this information to a press release issued on Monday by Abdullahi Yusuf’s Chief of Cabinet, Isma’il Warsame.
The date corresponds to Monday, May 6, 2002, the same date recorded by SomaliaWatch.
